Foreign volunteers will have a simplified procedure for signing a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to a Facebook post by the Ukrainian Ground Forces on November 16.

"Certain formats introduced in 2022 fulfilled their role during the most acute period of the country’s defence and made it possible to quickly integrate foreigners who were ready to join the ranks. At the same time, the situation at the front, the structure of the defence forces and the needs of combat units have changed significantly", – the statement reads.

The authors noted that an "evolution of the approach to the use of foreign servicemen" is taking place.

"The main principle of the new model is the most effective use of their experience, motivation, and professional skills in those units where they are needed most. Foreign volunteers […] will have broader opportunities for military service", – the Armed Forces stressed.

The Ground Forces stated that foreigners will have the right to choose a brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as the direction and specifics of their deployment, depending on their training, experience, and preferences.

"This ensures better integration, equal opportunities with Ukrainian soldiers, and more rational use of personnel resources. The Ground Forces highly value the contribution of foreign volunteers to Ukraine’s defence, their self-sacrifice, motivation, and commitment to our shared values", – the statement said.

Context:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the creation of the International Legion on the fourth day of Russia’s full-scale invasion – on 27 February 2022. He called on foreign citizens “to join the defence of security in Europe and the world.”

In June 2022, the Legion’s spokesperson reported that volunteers from all continents had joined the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine.

On 3 November 2025, Welt wrote that Ukraine is engaging thousands of foreign volunteers in its defence against Russia, many of whom are Colombians.
